Glow Sticks and Safety – Special Halloween Edition

With Halloween and Mischief Night fast upon us, stocking up on our glowsticks is a great idea. For anyone planning on spending the evening knocking on doors getting candy, having some our Glow Sticks on hand for the evening will help ensure the event is safe and fun.

We have a number of different glow sticks; some of which are perfect for an evening of getting candy. Our five pack of six inch glow sticks is an affordable way to make sure your children and you are visible while out and about. They can be found here: http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glowsticks/6-glowsticks.html. We offer some pretty impressive quantity discounts as well; so if you and your neighbors get together, the entire block can be safely illuminated for very little money. We also offer a number of other

If you want to spice up a Halloween costume with some glow, we are your source for that as well. A princess is more glamorous and safer with a glowing necklace or two as well as glowing bracelets to accentuate their outfit. Same goes for alien, robot or a number of children’s costumes. Glow necklaces can be found here: http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glowsticks/glow-tri-necklaces.html and one of our many bracelet options can be found here: http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glowsticks/glow-bracelets.html

While many parents simply buy cheap flashlights, we highly recommend the glowsticks. Drivers more easily see the colors colored light produced by the glowstick and it is not directional light. On top of this, they are impervious to rain, which is an unfortunate part of life here in the UK. A cheap flashlight will likely last the night, but if it rains it is more often than not ruined. While glowsticks are disposable, they are quite a bit more eco-friendly than flashlights and especially batteries that power them.

We also offer full-blown costumes that rely on glow stick technology to work. These costumes are one of our featured products and info on them can be found here: (link to blog post). These costumes not only look great but will be noticed by everyone walking and driving by. They come in child and adult sizes and come in two styles: the Glowman and the Glowbot. Either is a great way to really stick out of any crowd. On top of looking good, these costumes are a great way to ensure that the wearer is visible while out getting candy on Halloween.

You can find our Glowman and Glowbot offerings in the Glowear section of our site: http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glow-tshirts.html

While safety is the name of the game for Halloween, we also offer a few fun novelty products that would work to enhance a costume, not to mention be visible. We have glow glasses and glow caps, as well as glowing bunny ears. These fun novelties make great additions to costumes or can just be the costume for an older child or adult that is tagging along with the children.

Halloween is a fun time of year and one of our busiest times here at Glow Stick City. We enjoy finding new and unique products that are both designed for safety as well as fun. Because we specialize in glow sticks though, no matter how fun the products may be, all offer a level of safety that most other toys or costumes can offer.

Have a fun and safe Halloween and be sure to stock up on our glow sticks to help reach both of these goals. We offer a full line of glow products that are perfect for Halloween or any party. Instead of just having a party next time, make it a glow party!

Glow Badges – Two Sizes Fit All

Glow Badges – Two Sizes Fit All

If you have ever been to a party or special occasion gathering where people didn’t know everyone in attendance you probably are familiar with name tags. Typically they are white stickers where you write your name and then stick it to a part of your clothing. However, these stickers are not very stylish. In fact, they are rather tacky. However, there is another option that will add some flair to your tags and will give you plenty of other options for use. Glow badges come in two different sizes to suit anyone’s needs regardless of the purpose.

The large glow badges found at http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glow-badges-kit.html contain a variety of different colour badges including yellow, pink, orange, blue and green. They come in quantities of 25, 50, 100 and 200 so that you can choose the quantity that will best suit your event. They are large enough to hold whatever message you wish without having to cramp the writing into a small space. It also comes with its own handy Sharpie marker. You can even have your badges pre printed for you if you purchase a quantity of 500 or more.

The smaller glow badges found at http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/small-badge.html also come in a variety of colours and can be used in many different ways. Any type of permanent marker can be used to write your message on the badge. You apply some pressure to the badge and the LED lights will make your message blow. Either the large glow badges or small glow badges are ideal for any event and will give your gathering a bit of added personality and interest.

Glow badges are perfect for parties where people do not know one another. This is especially true if you are having a glow party where people should use UV reactive paint and clothing and LED lights to add some sparkle to the party. You can also use it when going out so new people you meet will never forget your name. While the night progresses you can be sure that everyone will call you by name when talking with you because it is written in plain sight.

Conferences and seminars are another great place to showcase the glow badges. Instead of those plain name tags you can set yourself apart by attracting more attention to yourself. If you are at a booth where prospective employees, customers or vendors are approaching you for information they will more easily remember you because of your badges that you are wearing. You can simply put your name on the smaller badge or add a slogan or logo to the large badge. For promoters of the event, the glow badges are perfect for attendees as a fun reminder of the event.

While the small and large glow badges are ideal for substitute name tags, this is not their only purpose. You can use them for sayings and art work as well. Ideal for a night out on the town or every day work you can post political views, spiritual, motivational or religious quotes. Or you can put jokes and funny sayings on them to show off your personality and sense of humour. Instead of wearing a funny T-shirt, add some flair that you can change and match your clothing inexpensively with the use of customizable glow badges.

Another great use for glow badges is as a prop for party games. You can assign each person a badge with a name or colour. You can create games that coincide with the badges and play them as ice breakers for your party. One great game is for a party to get to know one another. Have all the attendees fill out a badge and put it in a bag. Have each person pick from the bag at random and put the badge on. You have to go find yourself and introduce yourself to the person who has your name. This is a great ice breaker.

Imagination games using glow badges are also fun. Try using it to act out particular items such as train, car, dog or cat at a children’s party. Call out the item and anyone who is wearing that particular badge has to act like it. This is a really fun interactive game for children’s parties and school activities.

Glow badges are much more versatile than the typical name badges you see sometimes. Not only are they more attractive and eye catching but they have so many more fun uses. The number of ways you can use the small glow badges or large glow badges is limited only to your imagination. So, get some in bulk today and always have some on hand for your special occasions.

How Glow Sticks Work

How Glow Sticks work

The glow stick is a now a household name but a mere thirty years ago the glow stick was just being invented and it was not until later that the technology made its way into use by the public. The technology has come a long ways, with variations on the formula as well as through the use of different delivery technology.

The glow stick’s origins are twofold. Scientists wanted to recreate the chemical reaction that took place in fireflies and other bioluminescent creatures. The American military had interest in this technology to develop and use as a waterproof search and rescue light to issue to soldiers, especially Navy pilots that were more likely to crash land in the water.

The scientists that worked for the American Navy began breaking down the chemicals involved and originally tried to recreate the process as exactly as possible but it was not working so the scientists began messing with the process. The final outcome was a two part system that when activated, mixed these chemicals to produce light.

The chemicals themselves are hydrogen peroxide and a phenyl oxalate ester as well as a dye. The process is cyclical and produces light by the breakdown of the ester. A plastic barrier keeps the two chemical solutions separate from each other or the hydrogen peroxide solution is held in a glass ampoule, depending on the type of glow stick. When the user cracks that barrier and shakes the two solutions later, the light begins almost immediately.

The hydrogen peroxide acts as an activator, initiating the chemical process by oxidizing the ester. This creates phenol and an unstable peroxyacid ester which naturally decomposes first into cyclic peroxy compound then into carbon dioxide. This final decomposition releases energy into the dye which excite atoms in the dye, producing light.

The light produced, both color and intensity can be varied by the exact ester as well as the type of dye used. Different dyes yield different colours as well as different intensities. The best quality light sticks use different dyes that cost a bit more but also are more efficient in converting the energy they get into light.

The ester also makes a difference, with certain esters breaking down more quickly than others in the presence of the activator. Our five-minute Cyalume and Omniglow high intensity glow sticks provide five minutes of light but it is like cracking on a lightbulb. These are a great choice for emergency situations and also a great example of how a change in the ester compound maximizes light but also speeds up the reaction, giving only five minutes of bright light. Both of these glow sticks can be found here: http://www.glowstickcity.co.uk/glowsticks.html

A typical glow stick will last eight to ten hours, but that time can be manipulated. Because the reaction is a chemical one, adding heat will make the light brighter. Likewise, the reaction can be slowed to a stop by popping a glow stick in the freezer. In fact, this is a great way to save a glow stick again another day. Once the glow stick has warmed back up, it will produce light again but will never be as bright as it was before. The peroxide activator begins breaking down slowly when mixed into the solution almost immediately. When you freeze the glow stick, it needs the peroxide again to kick start the reaction but less is there than there was the night it was activated.

The glow stick has become much more than what it was initially designed for. In fact, the American navy dropped the project because the chemists could not get sufficient light for long enough to make including them worthwhile for military use. The company that bought the patent saw a consumer market, but had no idea how big it would get.

Even if you do not use all the glow sticks you took with you, you can save them for the next trip.

Glow sticks are an essential part of camping. They have a variety of uses that are convenient and a better option to other modes of illumination because they are lighter and more compact.
